The Whirlwind Pace of AI
Exploring the evolution of open source software and its impact on the Tech landscape.
In the latest episode of Open Source Ready, we sat down with Taylor Dolezal, former Head of Ecosystem at CNCF and now Chief of Staff at Merly AI, to discuss the rapidly evolving landscape of AI and its intersection with open source and Kubernetes.
Taylor offered a unique perspective on the current AI boom, drawing parallels to previous tech movements like DevOps while highlighting the disconnect between AI developers and infrastructure specialists. The conversation explored how Kubernetes is positioning itself as a platform for AI/ML workloads, the challenges of GPU integration, and the emerging patterns of what might become "MLOps."
Key Takeaways:
The AI industry is moving at a dizzying pace, with frequent paradigm shifts and terminology changes
There's a concerning disconnect between AI developers and systems/platform engineers
Many companies are rushing to announce AI initiatives but struggle with actual implementation and utilization
Open source projects like DeepSeek show promise for democratizing AI tools
"It is truly a whirlwind when it comes to trying to think through how to develop product in this front. I think that AI is an ingredient, right? It's like salt or eggs or lettuce or chives. It's part of it. It's not the product. It's a product for the builders that are making something else. That's where I think a lot of companies have gone wrong... You don't have to throw away all your web dev experience, your systems knowledge. None of that goes away. It's just what happens if you add a database, a cache, some kind of new primitive has emerged." - Taylor Dolezal, Chief of Staff at Merly AI
Taylor advocates for a more measured, intentional approach to AI implementation, suggesting that companies should focus on integrating AI as a component rather than seeing it as a complete solution. The episode concluded with a fascinating discussion about the impact of generative AI on critical thinking and skill development. Taylor shared this anecdote about GPU utilization:
"I've heard a lot of folks trying to figure out what their AI strategy is, and a lot of it is just sign the deal, make the big press release announcement, sign the deal, get access to the GPUs. And then unfortunately, there are several folks that I know of that aren't using them at all or minimally, like 2% utilization."
This 2% utilization rate of purchased GPUs highlights how many companies are securing AI infrastructure resources but barely using them - suggesting a significant gap between AI announcements and actual implementation in many organizations.
As we navigate this exciting but chaotic period in tech, the lessons from open source communities like CNCF provide valuable frameworks for collaboration and sustainable growth in the AI space.
Use those GPUs, and don't forget to stay ready.
